Oprah Gail Winfrey is an American actress, producer, author, talk show host, and media proprietor. She’s best known for her Chicago-based talk show, The Oprah Winfrey Show, which ran nationally from 1986 to 2011. Winfrey is also the founder of O, The Oprah Magazine, and Harpo Films, and the chairman and CEO of the OWN cable network. She’s an Academy Award-nominated actress for her role in The Color Purple and also acted in and produced the Oscar-winning film Selma.
Her birth name was Orpa, a biblical name that was consistently mispronounced as Oprah, which she adopted.
Her family was so poor that as a child, she was teased for wearing dresses made of potato sacks.
She was nicknamed “The Preacher” as a child for reciting Bible verses.
When she was 14, she had a son who died shortly after birth.
At age 17, she won the Miss Black Tennessee beauty pageant.
She owns an avocado orchard. She travels with her own avocados for personal use.
Her fears include balloons and chewing gum, the latter stemming from a childhood incident where her grandmother would chew gum and stick it to furniture, leading to a sticky surprise when Oprah bumped into it.
