Pope Pius IX was head of the Catholic Church from 16 June 1846 until his death in February 1878. His reign of nearly 32 years is the longest verified of any pope in history and second only to Saint Peter, according to Catholic tradition.
Pope Pius IX was born in Senigallia, Italy, on 13 May 1792, the son of Gerolamo of the Counts Mastai Ferretti, and Caterina Solazzi, of the local nobility. He was baptized on the day of his birth with the name Giovanni Maria. Of delicate physical constitution but of very lively intelligence, his childhood was marked by little voluntary mortifications and an intense religious life.
On the evening of 16 June 1846, he was elected Pope and took the name Pius IX.
He had a difficult pontificate, but precisely because of that, he was a great Pope, certainly one of the greatest. Thoroughly aware of being the “Vicar of Christ” and responsible for the rights of God and of the Church, he was clear, simple, and consistent. He combined firmness and understanding, fidelity and openness.
The process for his beatification, which in the early stages was strongly opposed by the Italian government, was begun on 11 February 1907, and recommenced three times. The Italian government had since 1878 strongly opposed beatification of Pius IX. Without Italian opposition, Pope John Paul II declared Pius IX to be Venerable on 6 July 1985 (upon confirming his life of heroic virtue), and beatified him on 3 September 2000 (his annual liturgical commemoration is 7 February, the date of his death). The beatification of Pius IX was controversial, and was criticized by some Jews and Christians because of what was perceived as his authoritarian and reactionary politics; the accusation of abuse of episcopal powers; and antisemitism (most specifically the case of Edgardo Mortara but also his reinstituting the Roman ghetto).
Pope Pius IX is not a saint, but he is a Blessed. He was beatified by Pope John Paul II on September 3, 2000, which is the final step before canonization (sainthood) in the Catholic Church. He is known as Blessed Pius IX.
Feast Day is on February 7
