Located on the northern Outer Banks of North Carolina, Bodie Island (pronounced “body”) is a historic peninsula famous for its iconic 156-foot, black-and-white horizontally striped lighthouse. It stretches south from Nags Head to Oregon Inlet and serves as the northern gateway to the Cape Hatteras National Seashore.
Built in 1872, the current structure is the third lighthouse to stand on this site. You can climb the 219 narrow spiral steps to the top for sweeping views of the Roanoke Sound and Atlantic Ocean.
The adjacent double keeper’s quarters, shown to the left, currently house a visitor center and park store.
Note: Despite local rumors that the name originated from shipwrecks and bodies washing ashore along the “Graveyard of the Atlantic,” the island is actually named after the Body family, early English immigrants who settled the area.

This was really interesting to read about this lighthouse and it’s history. The photo in the fog … makes it look mysterious. 🙂
