Postcard from Ascension Island

Ascension Island is an isolated British overseas territory in the South Atlantic Ocean, functioning as a strategic military, communications, and scientific hub (NASA and European Space Agency). Part of the British Overseas Territory of St Helena, Ascension, and Tristan da Cunha, it is internally self-governing with its own laws and constitution. Situated roughly halfway between Africa and Brazil, South America. Georgetown is the capital. It has a population of around 800, mainly employees, with no indigenous inhabitants. The island, known for its volcanic landscape and Green Mountain, uses the Saint Helena pound. It was discovered by Portugal in 1501, and it remained uninhabited until 1815, when the British garrisoned it. It became a vital aviation hub during World War II.
