-Summer Palace of Peter the Great

Postcard from Russia

…in St. Petersburg, Russia. This historic building is located in the Summer Garden, a popular park in the city. The palace was designed by the Italian architect Domenico Trezzini and built between 1710 and 1714.
It served as the summer residence for Peter I, the first Russian Emperor.
The modest architecture reflects Tsar Peter’s Spartan tastes, with none of the usual luxury associated with royal palaces.
Today the building functions as a museum and is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site of “Saint Petersburg and related groups of monuments.”
