  1. Not just the sharks in Australian waters stepping on the venomous stonefish is another hazard! The Brazilian beach looks idyllic.

    • OH wow! yes! I stepped on a creature with something on its back (not sure if a stonefish). The pain! They made me put my foot in ammonia…. pain last for hours…

      • Poor you. Not the result of a day at the beach you would wish. I think you were lucky with the treatment if not the pain.

The experience I heard and has lodged in my memory was from a man who was holidaying in the Cook Islands, the whole time the family was there he nagged the children to wear swim shoes. On the last day of their stay on the island he went in the water bare foot. Felt a prick, ignored it, but of course developed into intense pain and swelling. They then flew to New Zealand where the doctor there injected him with something in a giant syringe into where the spine had penetrated! The last leg of their journey was then to Australia. By this time he had not improved and was getting worse, so straight to an Australian hospital, he could hardly stand, was almost fainting. He was successfully treated with the contents of another big syringe but had to keep his leg elevated. Not only was it the venom it was the fact that the wound had become infected. So yes your bucket of ammonia was a life saver.

  2. Beaches – and the ocean – can be dangerous places. I have enjoyed this round the world trip to see them from the safety of my own home. ~violet
