Frida Kahlo was a Mexican painter best known for her self-portraits that explored themes of identity, the human body, pain, and the female experience. She became a feminist icon, and her work, which was initially not widely recognized, has gained significant acclaim, particularly in the 1970s and beyond. 

  • Kahlo painted primarily self-portraits, often depicting her physical and emotional pain, including the aftermath of a bus accident that caused lifelong injuries and health problems. 
  • Her work and life resonated strongly with the feminist movement, as she explored themes of motherhood, sexuality, and reproductive rights, challenging societal norms of the time. 
  • She was a member of the Mexican Communist Party and offered refuge to Leon Trotsky. 
  • Her marriage to fellow artist Diego Rivera was intense and complex, marked by both love and conflict. 
  • Her former home, “La Casa Azul,” is now a museum, and her paintings are highly sought after, with some setting records at auction.

  1. Years ago, when my youngest were young, there was a woman who did history presentations where she would act out different women. I remember her Kahlo. She told a bit about her relationship with her husband, and how her dog once peed on one of his paintings! There’s a cafe downtown called Freda, with her image, but there doesn’t seem to be much of a reason why that I can see.

  3. This is really interesting – La Casa Azul sounds like a lovely name for a house!
    It’s also incredible how art is embedded in every aspect of our culture. I love that we still talk about all aspects of who people are, not just the bits that line up with what we believe artists ‘should’ be (I get a lot of comments about politics in my own books, which I think isn’t valid).
