Postcard from Taiwan

“Formosa” is a historical name for Taiwan, given by Portuguese sailors in the 16th century because of its “beautiful island” appearance. The name also refers to the short-lived Republic of Formosa in 1895 between Chinese and Japanese rule, and the Formosa Resolution of 1955, which authorized the use of U.S. armed forces to protect the island. Additionally, Formosa is a Latin-derived word meaning “beautiful” or “well-formed” and is the name of a surname and a large Taiwanese conglomerate, Formosa Plastics Group.
