
Kamala Harris is the first female, first Black, and first Asian American U.S. Vice President and the highest-ranking Asian American and Black official in U.S. history. She is also an attorney who served as California’s Attorney General and as a U.S. Senator for California. She was the Democratic presidential nominee in 2024.
As a prosecutor, Harris founded an environmental crimes unit in San Francisco and created a re-entry program to help formerly incarcerated individuals.
Her full name is Kamala Devi Harris, and she was born on October 20, 1964.
Harris, who married attorney Douglas Emhoff in 2014, is stepmother to Ella and Cole Emhoff, who both refer to Harris as “Momala.”
Harris is named after the Hindu deity Lakshmi. The name “Kamala” means lotus in Sanskrit.
Her immediate family life is culturally diverse, and so is her family background. Her mother was from India, and her father is from Jamaica. She’s married to Doug Emhoff, who is Jewish.
