Central Police Station

Postcard from Hong Kong China

The postcard shows a “City in Time” display of the former Central Police Station compound in Hong Kong, known colloquially as Tai Kwun. The display contrasts the historical appearance of the site around 1930 with its modern, revitalized state.  Tai Kwun is a major heritage conservation and adaptive reuse project, transforming a former colonial-era compound into a vibrant center for heritage and arts.
The site comprises 16 historic buildings, including the former Central Police Station, Central Magistracy, and Victoria Prison, with over 170 years of history.
The buildings are a Declared Monument and were the headquarters for law enforcement in Hong Kong until after the Second World War.
It opened to the public in 2018 and features permanent exhibitions, contemporary architecture, public spaces, and various cultural programs.
