Australia – 2021 First Day Issue – Umbilicaria decussata. Being foliose, is one of the tallest Lichens in the Australian Antarctic Territory (AAT), growing up to 10 millimeters in height. It looks and feels like grey-black cornflakes stuck to rocks. It is highly susceptible to human disturbance, as a misplaced footstep can easily break off the leaf-like structures. It’s often found growing close to Buellia frigida but in the more sheltered part of a rock jumble. Its structure allows for the entrapment of soil, dust, and guano particles which are accessed to aid growth. The stamp photograph is by Dana M Bergstrom.

Lichens have fascinating forms and colours.
Oh, and I always like the Japanese stamps. I have received a couple of “Letter Writing Week” stamps from Japan, and they are really beautiful.

Adorable otter profile! I like the World of Letters stamps. I’ve gotten some of them from Postcrossing, but not all.

Nice you have the selvedge of the otter stamp, fascinating animals. I don’t think I’ve ever seen lichen on a stamp before, mysterious organisms.

Sorry I didn’t get my comment through before getting sick. Lichen makes for some interesting photos. Otters should feature more often on stamps.
