Creola Katherine Johnson was a NASA mathematician and aerospace technologist whose orbital mechanics calculations were crucial to the success of early US spaceflights. Johnson was a pioneer who broke racial barriers and helped calculate the trajectory for the first human spaceflight in 1961. She also calculated the trajectory for Neil Armstrong’s Apollo 11 mission to the moon in 1969.
