Bamberg Old Town Hall sometimes called the Bridge Town Hall or Island Town Hall, was built in 1386. The half-timbered Town Hall is in the middle of a rapid river, and bridges. The upper bridge is the oldest and the first bridge over the left Regnitz arm. This bridge connected the Hills of Bamberg with the “Island City,” first mentioned as a wooden bridge in 1157. The stone bridge of today was built in the 15th century. In the 17th century, it was the location of the resistance of the witch persecutions. Destroyed in 1945, the central arch was rebuilt in 1956. Since 1976, a part of the pedestrian zone, and up until 1922 the streetcars of Bamberg traveled over the upper bridge and through the tower of the old town hall.

Salzburg, Old Town, river Salzach. Makartsteg bridge crosses the Salzach River. The bridge was named after Hans Makart, an Austrian academic who was born and raised in Salzburg. The current bridge was built in 2001.
Makartsteg Bridge is often called “Love Lock Bridge” because of the thousands of locks that have been attached to it by both young and not-so-young lovers.

  1. I would totally go out of my way if I had to in order to take the tram that crossed the bridges and through the city hall tower! The Bridge of Sighs is one of the more storied bridges in Europe.

  2. The island town hall is so unique and beautiful. It would be a must if visiting to walk through the tower from one bridge to the other.
