The Joy Luck Club

Postcard from USA

When The Joy Luck Club premiered in theaters in 1993, it gave voice to a group of women that had not yet been depicted in American cinema.
Based on the bestselling 1989 novel by Amy Tan and directed by Wayne Wang, the movie tells the stories of four American-born Chinese women and their complex, and often fraught, relationships with their immigrant mothers. The film is celebrated for its openly feminist perspective and the empowerment of its Chinese American female characters.
